Wyld socks were originally knitted with our standard yarn. We soon realised we needed extra strength to add durability and support to our socks.
Socks have a different job from a jersey or blanket. After working with Dave at Comfort Socks, we created the perfect sock yarn. We've added a small amount of nylon to our sock blend for durability, while keeping wool and possum at the heart of the yarn.
The critical pieces to understand about our wool is its helical crimp, curvature, variation in fibre diameter and naturally smooth scales.
All these crucial factors make our wool the lightest.
Pihepe Fibre Traits
1- Helical Crimp.
This image shows the high curvature and helical crimp. It traps air and creates warmth without weight.
2- Variation in diameter and twist.
This image shows the irregular shape, thickness, and twist of the fibres.
3- Smooth scales.
This image shows naturally smooth scales of the fibre, which provides comfort and allows gentle entanglement of other fibres.

Our Uniqueness
We grow Pihepe wool as nature intended, with the optimum amount of wool for the sheep to thrive. We value natural quality, created through Natural Selection over maximizing fleece weight and fibre traits designed for fast, low cost production. Below is an image of a variety of fibres as they appear under a microscope. Note the differences between a Pihepe fibre and coarse wool, fine wool, alpaca and cashmere.

Unshrinkable
Wyld Casual sock knit is impossible to shrink. The fibre holds its shape no matter how hot it is washed or dried.
The knit of the boot socks allows for a little shrinkage if hot-washed and dried. The fibre felts up for ultimate comfort.

The cosiest socks you'll ever wear
The high curvature of these soft, spring-like fibres allow for stretching and returning to their original state (known as fibre memory).
Amazingly this fibre enables socks to mould to your feet. The more you wear the cosier you feel.

Thermal Regulation
This wool is about thermal comfort. It's high curvature creates Softloft™. The lightweight gentle entanglement of fibres is able to trap air in cool conditions and permits airflow in warm conditions. It's an air vent and an insulator all at the same time!

Odour free
With only minimal amounts of nylon, the blend is high in natural fibres. This enables socks to be worn for multiple days without washing with no odour to socks or feet.

The fibre blend
40% Pihepe | 30% Merino | 20% Possum | 10% Nylon
Pihepe is our own naturally coloured sheep wool, raised in New Zealand. Blended with Merino and Possum, it creates a warm, soft and hard-wearing sock with a little nylon for durability.

Our Wyld socks are manufactured by Comfort Socks in Levin, New Zealand. From our wool to the finished sock, we’re proud to keep production here in Aotearoa.
