Why Wyld

Natural fibres. Thoughtful making. Nothing unnecessary.

There are plenty of wool products out there.

We think Wyld is different.

We start with unusual New Zealand wool, work with its natural character rather than trying to change it, and make it into things you'll actually want to wear and use.

No fast fashion. No unnecessary fuss. Just good fibres, good people and products made to last.

It starts with the sheep

Wyld is built around two distinctive New Zealand wools: Pihepe and Bohepe. Pihepe is our natural brown wool, from Pitt Island Wild Sheep descended from Saxon Merinos brought to the Chatham Islands in 1841. Bohepe is our natural cream wool, from a separate breed of Wild Merino sheep developed through AgResearch. Both have their own natural character. We don't dye them to make them look a certain way. We let the wool be what it is.

Made in New Zealand

We don't just put a New Zealand label on the finished product.

The wool is grown here.
The yarn is made here.
Our products are made here.

Our yarn is scoured at Washdyke and blended and spun by Woolyarns in Wellington. Our garments and blankets are made by Otago Knitwear in Dunedin, and our socks are made by Comfort Socks in Levin.

We work with New Zealand manufacturers because we believe keeping these skills and processes here matters.

Natural, undyed fibres

We like wool that looks and feels like wool.

Our main yarns are made from natural, undyed fibres, blended with Merino and either Possum or Baby Alpaca to create the feel and performance we want.

Wyld:
50% Pihepe · 25% Merino · 25% Possum

Bohepe:
50% Bohepe · 25% Merino · 25% Baby Alpaca

Our socks use a different blend, with a small amount of nylon for strength and durability.

We don't superwash or thermoset our yarns.

Made slowly

We don't make thousands of something just because we can.

Natural fibres have their own character. Our approach is to work with that rather than force everything to behave exactly the same.

We make in smaller quantities, take our time with the process and don't chase seasonal trends.

QUALITY UNCOMPROMISED BY SPEED.

It's part of what we call the Slow Fibre Movement.

Warmth without the weight

One of the things people notice about Wyld is how light it feels.

Our yarns create warmth, softness and loft without making a garment feel heavy or bulky.

That makes Wyld easy to wear in real life — whether you're heading outside, sitting around a fire, travelling, working, walking the dog or simply trying not to have cold feet.

We make things to be used

A Wyld hat isn't made to sit perfectly folded on a shelf.

Our socks are made to walk in.
Our blankets are made to be curled up under.
Our ponchos are made to throw on and wear three different ways.
Our baby blankets are made to be dragged around, wrapped around little people and lived with.

We want our products to become part of everyday life.

The best clothing isn't seasonal — it becomes part of your story.

A little bit wild

Wyld started with a few sheep, an idea and a belief that nature had already done a pretty good job.

We still believe that.

Start with good natural fibres.
Work with them rather than against them.
Make them well.
And make something people want to keep wearing.

That's Wyld.
