Our Fibres & Blends

Two natural fibres. Two very different stories.

Wyld is built around two distinctive New Zealand wools:

Pihepe in natural brown and Bohepe in natural cream.

Both wools are natural, undyed fibres, blended with carefully chosen fibres to create the softness, warmth and lightweight feel that makes Wyld what it is.

Pihepe

The wool behind Wyld

Pihepe is the natural brown wool at the heart of our original Wyld range.

The story starts with sheep descended from Saxon Merinos brought to the Chatham Islands in 1841. Roger Beattie later brought a small number of these sheep back to New Zealand, where he continued to breed them.

Today, Pihepe sheep are farmed on Banks Peninsula.

Bohepe

Our natural cream wool

Bohepe is not Pihepe in a different colour. It is a separate sheep breed and the foundation of our natural cream range.

Bohepe is an AgResearch breed of Wild Merino sheep. Roger Beattie bought some of the sheep when the trials ended.

Its wool is blended with Merino and Baby Alpaca to create a soft, lightweight yarn with a naturally creamy colour.

Why blend wool?

We don't believe one fibre has to do everything.

Pihepe and Bohepe bring their own natural character, and Softloft™.

Merino adds softness.

Baby Alpaca add warmth and softness to the finished yarn.

Possum adds warmth without adding much weight.

The result is a lightweight blend designed for everyday wear - warm when you need it, without the weight of a heavy garment.

That's the Wyld difference.

Wyld or Bohepe?

Which one is for you?

It's mostly a matter of colour and fibre character.

Both ranges are made from natural, undyed fibres.

The biggest difference is the wool itself - and, of course, whether you're a brown person or a cream person.
