Wyld Sock Etiquette: How to Get the Most Life Out of Your Wool Socks
A good pair of wool socks should be one of the hardest-working items in your wardrobe. Whether you're on the farm, tramping through the hills, working outdoors, or simply enjoying a cosy day at home, your socks are there for every step.
At Wyld, we often hear from customers who are still wearing socks they purchased years ago. While our wool socks are designed to be durable, a few simple habits can make a remarkable difference to how long they last.
1. Pull From the Body, Not the Top
One of the most common causes of premature wear occurs when socks are pulled on or removed by grabbing only the cuff or top band.
The cuff contains elastic fibres that help keep the sock comfortably in place. Repeated stretching and tugging on this area can eventually weaken the elastic, causing the sock to lose its shape or even break.
Instead, when putting on or removing your socks, grip the main body of the sock and ease it over your foot. This places less strain on the cuff and helps maintain its elasticity.
2. Wool Loves a Day Off
Unlike synthetic fibres, wool naturally resists odour and moisture build-up.
Many customers are surprised to learn they don't need to wash their wool socks after every wear. Allowing socks to air out between uses gives the fibres time to recover and can extend their lifespan considerably.
If you own multiple pairs, rotating them throughout the week is one of the best ways to maximise longevity.
3. Wash Gently
Wool performs best when treated gently.
We recommend:
Machine cycle or hand washing
Avoiding bleach and harsh chemicals
These simple steps help preserve the natural softness and performance of the wool.
5. Skip the Hot Dryer
Excessive heat can damage wool fibres and affect the fit of your socks.
Whenever possible, air dry your socks naturally. Not only is it gentler on the wool, but it's also better for the environment.
6. Store Them Properly
When not in use, store socks clean and dry.
Natural fibres can attract insects, so keeping socks in a drawer, cupboard, or breathable storage bag helps protect them between seasons.
Why It Matters
Our Wyld boot socks are made using premium New Zealand wool because we believe natural fibres create a better sock. They regulate temperature, manage moisture, and provide comfort across a wide range of conditions.
A little care goes a long way. By following these simple sock etiquette rules, you'll enjoy more comfort, better performance, and many more kilometres from every pair.
After all, life's too short for uncomfortable socks.
